Rouge d'Hiver Lettuce - Heirloom!
Rouge d'Hiver Lettuce - Heirloom!
Lactuca sativa
Meaning red of winter, this lovely French heirloom has green inner leaves with deep bronzed tips. Preferring the cooler weather, it is best grown in the spring or fall. Our seed stock originally came to us from the Heirloom Seed Sanctuary in Kingston and we continue to select it to maintain its true form as a semi-open romaine. As with many older varieties, it is a bit slower growing; 65 days to maturity.
Planting Tips
Whether seeding into a pot or directly into the garden, be sure not to bury the lettuce seed too deep. Cover the seed lightly; approximately 1/8" with loose soil and pat down gently. Keep the soil consistently moist until the plants emerge. Being heat sensitive, lettuce will usually germinate best below 24 degrees Celsius.
