Piracicaba Broccoli
Piracicaba Broccoli
Brassica oleracea
What a gem this broccoli, it has won us over in one season! Piracicaba grows a small head, though where it shines and what we love it for is its small side shoots that just keep growing throughout the summer heat and even after a few frost have settled in the garden. And the best part is the flavour - sweeter than other broccoli we've grown and eaten. This variety grows basically like rapini but with no bitter flavour that last through the season through heat and cooler weather. Just keep harvesting the shoots. The stems and leaves are equally delicious. If you're looking for heads, better grow Solstice or De Cicco. If you prefer flavour and continuous harvest grow this one. We'll be growing it in our kitchen gardens from now on. 56 days to maturity.
In the kitchen
Try the florets simply sautéed in a pan with olive oil and garlic, a sprinkling of chili flakes and salt and pepper. Top with shaved cheese of choice.
