First thing first, a word of caution: all parts of plant, especially the seeds are highly toxic! Do not eat this bean, it is not for consumption. It is however a highly decorative plant to add to the flower garden as it adds a bit of a tropical feel up here in the North. Used commercially to extract castor oil, this variety is smaller than most castors yet still grows up to 4-5' tall. Hummingbirds and pollinators alike love this plant, and we think you'll appreciate its red-bronzed leaves too. Seed pods form in prickly clusters. Plant 1-2' apart. An annual plant in our garden, the deer don't touch it and it will flower until frost.
